Build an issue triage agent with Linear MCP

The agent reads, labels and comments on new issues by itself. A change of state or assignee waits for a person.

Set up the Linear triage agent in four steps

Example: an agent named triage-bot labels and comments on new Linear issues. It sees only the five tools triage needs, so it spends no tokens on the rest.

  1. 01 Connect

Add Linear's MCP server and sign in once

Add https://mcp.linear.app/mcp in Servers and sign in to Linear once.

    • Meandr renews the sign-in and alerts you if renewal fails
    • The agent never holds your Linear access
How Meandr signs in to upstream servers
  2. 02 Tools

Import five Linear tools and nothing else

Switch on only the five tools triage uses, and the agent never sees the rest.

    • Reads: list issues, open an issue, list labels
    • Writes: add a comment, create or update an issue
    How the Server catalog works
  3. 03 Policies

Let reads, labels and comments run, and hold state and assignee changes

The Approve policy sits first, so a new state or assignee is held before any Allow policy can let it through.

    • Reads, comments, labels and new issues run on their own
    • Anything no policy covers is denied by the Default policy
How a policy checks what a call changes
  4. 04 Approve

A person approves each state or assignee change

The held change waits on the Tasks page, where an approver opens the request and allows or denies it.

    • Approval type Offline, Deadline 900 seconds
    • A denied or expired change never reaches Linear

Questions about Linear MCP security and triage

Does Meandr run the triage on a schedule?
Your agent runs when you start it, from Claude Code, Codex or a scheduler you already use.
Can the agent close an issue on its own?
Only if you allow state changes, and in this setup they wait for a person.
Can I keep the agent to one Linear team?
Yes for calls that name a team, such as listing issues: add an Arguments matcher on the team to the Allow policies.
Where do I see what the agent did?
In Traffic, one row per call with the policy that decided it.

Give your triage agent only the Linear access it needs

Five Linear tools and four policies are enough to start.
